Who is Jim Leslie?
Welcome back to the Change Your Filter podcast! In Season 3, Episode 12, Lisa sits down with Jim Leslie, CEO of Home Service Freedom, to talk about the systems, leadership, and processes contractors need to reach the next level.
Jim previously served as Chief Marketing Officer at A1 Garage Door, where he worked alongside Tommy Mello. Jim says A1 was doing roughly $30 million when he started and reached $250 million during his tenure. Today, he works with contractors across the country to help them build businesses that are scalable, sustainable, and ultimately create more freedom for the owner.
What to Expect
In this episode, Jim explains why the systems that get a contractor to one level of growth often won’t get them to the next.
Lisa and Jim discuss some of the patterns he consistently sees among successful home service businesses, starting with clearly defined roles, organizational structure, strong leadership, and a willingness to continually learn and challenge assumptions.
Jim also shares how Home Service Freedom helps contractors systematize the processes required to scale, from call center and sales training to marketing, leadership, performance pay, and operations. Rather than having owners piece together their business from scattered ideas, the goal is to give them a structured path they can follow as they grow.
The conversation dives into reverse engineering growth goals using five core KPIs: booking rate, cancellation rate, job closing rate, average ticket, and cost of marketing percentage. From there, contractors can identify the people, tools, infrastructure, and projects needed to reach their goals.
Jim also shares examples of contractors who transformed their businesses by putting these systems into place, including one company that grew from roughly $18 million to $30 million while becoming more organized and another that went from losing about 5% to becoming profitable within a matter of quarters.
